    The various skill areas associated with the building maintenance program are; orientation to building maintenance, carpentry and finishing procedures, plumbing procedures, electrical procedures and environmental control systems, masonry procedures, grounds maintenance equipment and procedures.  Basic skills development in all areas is emphasized.

   Workers obtain supplies and repair parts from distributors or storerooms.  They use common hand and power tools such as screwdrivers, saws, drills, wrenches, and hammers as well as specialized equipment.  These workers do routine preventive maintenance and ensure that the physical condition of buildings does not deteriorate.

    General maintenance workers hold at present time about 1.5 million jobs.  They work in almost every industry.  More than one-third work in service industries; around one-fifth are employed in manufacturing industries; others work for real estate firms that operate office and apartment buildings or for wholesale and retail firms, government agencies, or gas and electric companies.
